HP Printer ink??

I have an HP C4200 all in one printer and the manual says to use the following ink:

74, 74XL and 75, 75XL. It aslo lists 99 for photos. My ';gap'; in my understanding is why use 99 if you have colored ink? Also, what is the difference, say, between 74XL and just plain old 74?

Thanks!HP Printer ink??
Photo ink is different than regular color ink so you will have better picture quality color. XL ink will last longer.HP Printer ink??
The photo cartridge has a light black, light magenta and light cyan, and is entirely a waste of money even if you are printing photos.

The XL cartridges have more ink in them.
The 99 cartridge is a photo cartridge, which contains Light Cyan, Light Magenta, and Black. When you use that in combination with a tri-colour cartridge (which has cyan, magenta and yellow) you can create a larger spectrum of colours.

That cartridge is made for use with HP paper. Although other photo papers are fine and will still provide high quality prints (as long as it's decent quality paper), it's usually a waste of money to use a photo cartridge with non-hp paper, since they are designed to work together. Just stick with Black and Colour if you have another brand of photo paper.
