Using generic printer ink?

I know that Epson/Canon want you to use their own brand of ink because ';it works better,'; but can I use the generic ink...it's like 75% cheaper!!Using generic printer ink?
The ink that Epson (for that matter HP, Kodak, Canon etc.) sells is a proprietary formulation. Most ink jet cartridges use heaters (one per nozzle) to nucleate (boil) the ink to eject the drop to the paper. Non-compatible inks may corrode or contaminate the heater surface. Since their fluidic properties are also often different (surface tension, viscosity, density, vapor pressure, surfactant / humectant levels to name a few) it is likely that performance will suffer.

The savings are more like 50 to 60%. The New Kodak printers use refill tanks that already cost what generics cost and are made specificaly for their printers, by Kodak. (see below)

You can but you may not get as good a quality image when printing photos.

If you are wanting to print out high quality photos it is best to use the manufacturer paper and ink.

For draft stuff then third party ink or refils are fine.
Just FYI, you can take it for granted that ALL ink is generic. As you might easily determine, if you think about it, neither Epson nor Canon produce ink. Why would they?

Feel free to use whatever ink you like. If you save 75% enough, soon you'll be able to replace the printer if something goes wrong. I can't wait until the 'dollar store' carries ink!
You can use generics, you could also just refill your ink cartriges, the only reason they say ';it works better'; is cause they make money off of epson/cannon ink, but they dont off generic.
