Not the same. The models that can use refillable ink tanks are much cheaper on ink. They are now relatively hard to find, because the new generation of printers uses ink cartridges with electronic counters. Any older Canon printer that uses BCI-3e tanks is fine, S800-S900 series, S630, etc. I use Canon MP780 and bottled ink from justbulkink.com
